On the outskirts of this quaint little town, situated on just under an acre of land, rests the beautiful antebellum brick home that was built by Dr. Nickerson Snead around 1835. Today this lovely relic of the past still stands in all its glory, housing a historical and haunted B&B and is currently owned by Ronda and Ricky Caudill, who purchased the house in 2004. In recent pat the house was used a restaurant, a bed and breakfast, an antique store, then a museum that up until recently during the Halloween season transformed it into the Haunted Mansion, a temporary haunted attraction. Then during the remainder of the year the museum hosted many other events, such as Murder Mystery dinners, craft festivals, craft classes, quilts shows, living histories, metaphysical conferences, and overnight paranormal investigations. Now the beautiful haunted Antebellum is host to a haunted B&B and still hosts metaphysical events, and public paranormal investigations with the Tennessee Wraith Chasers.

In the 1700’s the land that the NSH sits on in addition to approximately 350 acres was settled by Frances Kincannon. Mr. Kincannon built at least one log cabin on the property and it was used as a for during the Revolutionary war. It was called Fort Kincannon or Kincannon’s Fort. When Mr. Kincannon died the land was left to his son and brother who sold off parcels to Dr. Nickerson Snead.
Dr. Snead married widow Elizabeth (Betsy) Scott Beatie. Betsy’s first husband had owned most of what is now downtown Glade Spring, VA. So between what Dr. Snead had purchased and the land Betsy brought into the marriage they had several hundred acres. Dr. Snead built the Antebellum we see today around Kincannon’s cabin, which is still situated in the heart of the house. Betsy and Nickerson were both Glade Spring post masters for a time, using the small brick building on the property as parcel pickup and drop off. Dr. Snead used the house as a temporary hospital during the Civil War and the cellar was used a morgue during the winter months.

After the Sneads passed away, the Mason family purchased the house. They lived in the house for roughly 100 years. Two Mason children died in the house, Josephine and Douglas Mason. Josephine died from diphtheria and Douglas from being kicked in the head by a horse.
Ricky and Ronda Caudill purchased the house in 2004. During the time they have owned it there has been used as an antique store, a historic museum, haunted attraction and today a haunted B&B.

Purchase The History & the Hauntings of the Nickerson Snead House by Ronda L. Caudill to learn more about this historic Antebellum and its very important role during the wars in the Appalachian Mountains.

    1. What are the hours of the museum. I broke down across the street from this beauty and stayed at the econo lodge overnight. I’m a huge history buff and already purchased the book. I’m fascinated with the history of this house and would love to tour it. Can I talk to the owners somehow. I’m coming back to glade spring this weekend..

It looks to be that our next event with the Wraith Chasers will be August 4-5.

Our Bed and Breakfast isn’t open just yet, we’re still working on it to make sure we can give our guests the best experience possible. We also post updates on that via Facebook as well. There are a lot of sneak peeks into the rooms that will be available. We’d love your feedback!

    1. If it’s in Washington County, have you tried the Historical Society in Abingdon?
Elizabeth Jane (Scott) Snead’s grandparents were my 5g grandparents. They lived east of Saltville.

  4. I see it’s been awhile since last post. Francis Kincannon is my 8th g. grandfather. My Mother is a Kincannon- direct descendant. I’d be thankful to share and exchange any known information. I have not been able to verify for certain Francis’ parents from Ulster, specifically his mother (Mary?). I’ve read two somewhat differing accounts. Agreed, the history of family branches intriguing.

  5. Came to visit my Son and stayed at hotel where the house sits. We took photos of the house and believe I captured the children looking out the upstairs lft. Corner bedroom window when I zoomed in with the camera. Very exciting and a little spooked. My sister and I were wishing it was open so we could see more.

  6. The log cabin part of the house that belonged to Francis Kincannon during the American Revolution is a direct descendant of our family and we have become members of SAR. It would be a wonderful visit and ghost stay tour to tell the family.
